Achieve your foot health goals with Dr. Juliet Colyer and Practical Podiatry.
I became a podiatrist in 1996, graduating at the top of my class at Des Moines University. Most of my fellow graduates wanted to be surgeons. I chose a different path from the beginning, much to the amazement of my fellow students and teachers. I was interested in the old style podiatry--minor procedures, shoes, insoles, pads--known as primary care or the study of biomechanics. I was more interested in what could be achieved with the right shoe than what could be achieved in an operating room. I have also been very focused on preventing amputations in diabetics, and worked for the non-profit Limb Salvage International from 1998 to 2016, and for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma from 2008 to 2023. Now, my passion is to share my knowledge with you and to teach you how to manage your foot pain conservatively.
Podiatry turned into a surgical ONLY profession in the 90's. At that time, many states changed licensure requirements so you couldn't practice podiatry at ALL without a surgical residency. Primary Care and Biomechanical practitioners were consigned to the rubbish bin. I watched these changes with dismay. I feel strongly that these changes contributed to patients having surgery sooner than needed and with less satisfaction. My focus has ALWAYS been clear--to practice and preserve primary care podiatry, or practical podiatry, if you like. Surgery has its place. But not on this site. I believe good information about Conservative Footcare can help patients achieve their most healthy and fit life. I hope you enjoy learning with me.
My goal is to create content across social media platforms to educate patients and doctors about the lost art of Practical Podiatry. I want the average person to understand their foot conditions better before AND after they leave their podiatrist's office. I understand that insurance pressures have disrupted connection between patients and their foot doctors. I would like to use social media to help mend that disconnect. People are smart and are turning to the internet for ways to manage their foot health on their own. While this site is not a substitute for an individual exam and treatment plan by your local podiatrist, please allow me to teach you how to navigate the world of over-the-counter foot care devices, insoles, shoes, and other products marketed for the foot and ankle. I don't have your back, but I've got your feet!
